Ragnarok Online, commonly referred to as RO, is a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMORPG) created by GRAVITY Co., Ltd. RO was first released in South Korea in 2002 and has since been released in numerous countries worldwide. The game, mostly played in the Philippines, has an estimated 25 million members and includes both P2P (Pay to Play) and F2P (Free to Play) memberships.
Ragnarok Online is made up of three major regions or maps. Rune Midgard is where all characters begin their adventure, the industrialized Schwaltzvalt Republic is located in the northern part of the world, and Arunafeltz is a religious nation similar to Turkey and Israel. Other smaller nations are usually similar to ancient real world societies. Traveling from one RO map or region requires players to load the new map. Ragnarok Online leveling is usually focused around defeating monsters for experience which strengthens characters. The higher level a player is the harder is it to gain experience so many players prefer joining parties or RO guilds instead of going solo. Completing certain quests is another method of gaining experience and common and rare Ragnarok Online items and/or Zeny (the in-game currency) is oftentimes needed to complete the quests. Some RO quests have a complex story line while others may be completed to gain access to secret places and certain features. The level system for each Ragnarok Online character is divided into two categories, Job Level and Base Level. The Base Level develops the characters attributes which are AGI, DEX, INT, LUK, STR, and VIT. It takes a certain amount of points to increase each attribute by 1 which is gained when characters level their Base Level. The RO Job Level advances characters’ jobs and after each Job Level are given 1 skill point that is used to level a Job Skill. Ragnarok Online jobs are extremely important since they determine what strengths and weaknesses characters possess. There are 39 different jobs to choose from which are divided into 6 different categories: Novices, Super Novices, First Job Classes, Second Job Classes, Transcendent Classes, and Extended Classes. All RO characters begin the game as a Novice which is a tutorial class for new players. Upon reaching level 9 of Basic Skills, the only ability available for beginning characters, a Novice may change jobs. |

Ragnarok Online PvP
Players may also participate in PvP (Player versus Player) combat if they are a level 31 or higher. RO PvP takes place in maps similar to major towns in the game with the exclusion of NPC’s (Non- Player Characters). PvP is divided into two categories: Yoyo Mode which has no penalty for dying and Nightmare Mode which has the same experience point and item penalties as regular maps. In addition to PvP, players may also participate in WoE (War of Emperium ) which is a 'Guild War' featured for two hours each week.
